Our $9 Beach Trip

First Time at the beach

One of the items on Baby Boy’s summer wish list was to go to the beach. He’s been to the local lake, which has a beach but it’s just not the same experience as a real ocean beach.

It’s so great that we can drive less than an hour to get to the beach. The weather was absolutely perfect, temperature was in the high 70s, no humidity, some clouds and a nice breeze. I’m telling you, PERFECT! The beach we went to is on the Long Island Sound, so even though it is not directly on the Atlantic ocean, you still get the salt water.

The first thing he did when we got there was to run straight to the water to see the ocean. Good thing he already had his bathing suit on!  He loved the waves, which I was grateful were not big at all. He loved picking up the seashells and the smooth pebbles. But most of all, he loved chasing the seagulls. It was great watching him try to catch a seagull. There were a few times where he thought he almost got one (oh the innocence). He ran and laughed and just had the best time. It was such a joy to see him enjoy such a simple thing.

As my husband and I sat there watching him play, we also admired how beautiful God’s creation is. We are so blessed to live where we live. We can drive to the beach less than 1 hour from our house, see and taste the ocean water, watch the seagulls fly and experience nature’s beauty. It was so relaxing and peaceful.

And, do you know how much this trip cost?

  • Admission to the State Park: $9
  • Lunch: $0 (We packed what we already had at home.)
  • Gas: $0 (Tank was already full from our weekly fill up.)
  • Beach Experience: PRICELESS

Many times, we think we need to save up and spend a lot of money so that we can have a good time with our kids. This experience was a perfect example of how the simplest and least expensive activities can create the best memories. The beach was not our first choice and my husband and I were not excited about going, but we knew how much Baby Boy wanted to experience it and in the end, it turned out to be one of the most perfect days in every way. The other options were the aquarium, with an admission cost of $54 for the three of us or the local amusement park, with a splash pad and a beach, which would have cost $68 for the three of us. Those place would have been fun, I’m sure, but definitely not as relaxing and memorable.
