Buying School Supplies for a Good Cause

School Supplies Photo Text

Well, it’s that time of year again. Where all of the TV commercials are all about Back-To-School shopping and every store flyer is filled with school supplies at super low prices.

I get excited for this time of year. Not only because I’m a nerd and I LOVE school supplies but also because I get to shop for items to pack in Operation Christmas Child boxes.  It’s great because I have an excuse to fill my cart with 25 cent boxes of crayons and 1 cent pencils. I get to buy all the cute erasers, pen and pad sets I want and not feel like I’m a hoarder. Nope, no need to call the show on me, because all of it will be out of my house by November. 🙂

What?!? You’ve never heard of Operation Christmas Child!! Well, then let me explain…

Operation Christmas Child is an organization that collects shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies, toiletries, and candy for boys and girls around the world. This is used as a tangible way to share God’s love and hope for needy children.

Facts about OCC:

  • Started in 1993 by Samaritan’s Purse International
  • More than 113 Million shoeboxes have been collected and delivered
  • Over 150 countries on 6 continents have received shoeboxes
  • Shoeboxes are collected in the United States, Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
  • More than 500,000 volunteers worldwide, with more than 100,000 of those in the United States, are involved in collecting, shipping, and distributing shoebox gifts.

So, if you love school supplies as much as I do and need an excuse to buy them, now I’ve given you permission to go out and buy to your heart’s content. As long as you promise to donate those items to a local church that will be filling boxes. Or, better yet, go ahead and start planning to fill your own boxes. All it takes is a few items and $7 for processing and you can make a difference in a child’s life.

Happy Shopping!!
